"So they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger." "When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told them about this child." Chicago (August 7, 2003)

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In his apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae [On the Most Holy Rosary], Pope John Paul II declared October 2002-October 2003 “The Year of the Rosary.” His intent in that letter was to offer encouragement and an exhortation to all the Catholic faithful “to contemplate the face of Christ in union with, and at the school of, his Most Holy Mother.”

The Holy Father envisions the Rosary and the person of the Blessed Virgin Mary as indispensable elements of a contemplative renewal in the Church. From this contemplative renewal, he expects a revitalized spirit of mission in the Church.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, we join the Holy Father and the universal Church in celebrating the Year of the Rosary through a series of prayer services in the months of September and October. We will also have catechetical and instructional materials available for those who wish them. Finally, we encourage each other to pray the Rosary and so to join ourselves more closely to the mysteries of Jesus Christ in the company and with the guidance of his Mother. I urge you and invite you to be a part of this holy moment.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.
Archbishop of Chicago

"When we say the Rosaries, especially
in families, we are with Mary gazing with Love upon her Son, looking at him with her eyes, meditating on the events of his life through Mary's
memory of them. Habitually praying the rosary helps us each day refresh our personal intimacy with Jesus Christ, 'the way and the truth and the life" for us (Jn 14:6)."

THE YEAR OF THE ROSARY

OnOctober 16th, 2002
Pope John Paul II proclaimed October
2002 to be "The year
of the Rosary." In
doing so the Holy
Father added five mysteries to the
traditional fifteen.

"The history of the
rosary shows how
this prayer was used...
at a difficult time for
the Church... today
we are facing new challenges. Why
should we not once
more have recourse
to the rosary, with the same faith as those
who have gone before
us? The rosary retains
all its power and
continues to be a
valuable pastoral
resource for every
good evangelizer."
