How to Pray the Rosary

The Rosary is a devotion to the Incarnation of Our Lord and to His Blessed Mother. It is composed of fifteen decades, each decade consisting of the Our Father, ten Hail Mary's, and the Glory Be to the Father, and each being recited in honor of some mystery in the life of Our Lord and of His Blessed Mother. During each decade we should call to mind the mystery which it is intended to honor, and pray that we may learn to practice the virtue specially taught us by that mystery.

Begin the Rosary by:

Making the Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Say the  Apostles Creed.

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

  1. Say the Our Father

  2. Our father, who art in heaven; hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.

  3. Say three Hail Mary's

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

  4. Say the  Glory Be and then, if you wish, say the Fatima Prayer or Hail Holy Queen

  5. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. .

  6. Fatima Prayer O my Jesus, forgive our sins; save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who are in most need of Thy mercy. Amen. OR
Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve: to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn, then , most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us: and after this our exile show unto
to us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus: O clement,
O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

    V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
    R. That we may be worthy of the promise of Christ
    Let us pray.
O God, whose only begotten Son, by his life, death and resurrection has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech thee. that meditating upon these mysteries in the most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, e may imitate what they contain, and obtain what they promise: through the same Christ our Lord. Amen

  7. Announce the First Mystery
    then say the Our Father

  8. Say ten  Hail Mary's , while meditating on the Mystery

  9. Say the Glory Be ,  the Fatima Prayer

  10. Announce the Second Mystery
then say the Our Father  Repeat steps 6 and 7
and Announce Third Mystery, Repeat steps 6 and 7
Announce the Fourth Mystery, Repeat steps 6 and 7
Announce the Fifth Mystery,  Repeat steps 6 and 7

  11. Say the Hail Holy Queen and the Let Us Pray. Our Rosary group ends the Rosary with Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel, "The Memorare, and the Sign of the Cross.

HAIL, HOLY QUEEN, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!
              V. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.
              R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

"When we say the Rosaries, especially in families, we are with Mary gazing with Love upon her Son, looking at him with her eyes, meditating on the events of his life through Mary's memory of them. Habitually praying the rosary helps us each day refresh our personal intimacy with Jesus Christ, 'the way and the truth and the life" for us (Jn 14:6)."

THE YEAR OF THE ROSARY

  On October 16th, 2002
Pope John Paul II proclaimed October 2002 to be The year of the Rosary. In doing so the Holy Father added five mysteries to the traditional fifteen.

"The history of the rosary shows how this prayer was used... at a difficult time for the Church... today we are facing new challenges. Why should we not once more have recourse to the rosary, with the same faith as those who have gone before us? The rosary retains all its power and continues to be a valuable pastoral resource for every good evangelizer."

The Rosary is a way of praying that combines reciting prayers
(the Hail Mary and the
Our Father)
while meditating or considering events in the in the life of Jesus. These events are called "mysteries". and there are twenty of them.

Each mystery is considered as a decade is recited, that is one Our Father and ten Hail Mary's.
