Frederick B. Young
Was born March 31, 1930, to
Reverend Earl and Violet Young in Mount Pleasant
Tennessee. He was the ninth of ten children.
He
began playing music at the early age of three
and by the age of five
he was playing Gospel
Music by ear in the Church. He attended Clark
Training
School in his hometown. He then served in the
Korean War for
three years as Chaplain.
Following his military service, he began his
musical education at Fisk University in Nashville Tennessee and
received his BA
degree. Upon completion of his first degree in
1961 he
became the first African American school
teacher in Northfield Illinois.
He then came to
Chicago and received his Masters Degree
from the
Chicago Musical College at Roosevelt University.
As
he began to pursue his spiritual mission, he
played for Churches in Chicago on the weekend.
He became Choir Director and Organist with the following
Churches Union Tabernacle Missionary, Zion
Temple, Fellowship Missionary, Progressive,
Martin Temple, Quinn Chapel, St. Andrews Temple.
He served as Director of the
Operation Breadbasket Choir (Later named
Operation Push) from 1969- 1973. As a professional
pianist he traveled extensively throughout
France, Italy, Germany, West Africa and South
Africa performing in concerts, making numerous
television appearances and accompanying
many groups and singers in their recordings
including The Young Culp Trio, J. Roberts
Bradley, Fellowship missionary Choir and
Operation Breadbasket Choir.
Before
God called Frederick Young home he served 13
productive years as Minister of Music at St.
Ailbe Catholic Church and he worked closely
with
the Pastor John Breslin. His legacy will be experienced
in this
Church for years to come. He demanded many
things of himself as he
did for the music ministry of St. Ailbe. A
day would not go by that
Mr. Young's voice would be heard on offering how "things"
could be
enhanced here at St. Ailbe. His commitment
to the mission of our
Church went beyond the music ministry - to say
the least. Throughout
the years as contractors were enhancing our
facilities Mr. Young would
be on hand to offer "helpful"
suggestions, in a loving manner. As we
renovated the Church those entrusted with its renovation received daily
pieces of information from Mr. Young on paint selection, sound
system, carpet material, etc. etc. He said
"We must
not give garbage to God. We must make God's
temple the best befitting place to worship Him".
He taught, mentored and
chastised on every aspect of life and Ministry.
Fred had opinions and was not afraid of sharing
them to all who would or would not listen.
A Home-going
celebration was held for Frederick Young.
His Music
Ministry will be living within our
Church beyond the years to come. On
Tuesday,
June 10, 2003 we as his Church family celebrated,
"A
Musical Evening Of Remembrance". It
was an "evening of Tribute'. It
was estimated that over 1000 people passed
through our Church doors for this celebration.
It was Memorable! It was Festive! It was
Enjoyable!
On the next morning, June11, 2003 family
and friends gathered from far and wide, around
our altar and celebrated Mr. Young's last
liturgy. There were many notables present and
Rev. Jesse Jackson expressed words of
comfort to the family. In a very special moment
for all those in attendance each of Mr. Young's
family individually stood and proudly introduced
themselves and stated their relationship to Mr.
Young.
Fred's teachings will live on in
all of our lives, May God bless him
eternally. A
final chapter is now written on the life and
Ministry of
Mr. Frederick B. Young.
Ephesians 2:8
"For by grace you have been saved
through faith, and this is not from you; it is
the gift of God;"
Psalms
37:3-5
"Trust in the LORD
and do good that you may dwell in the land and
live secure" "Find your delight in the
LORD who will give you your heart's
desire". "Commit your way to the LORD;
trust that God will act"
