On November 1,
2003 . The Health and Wellness Ministry The Fair was an event for the Entire Family and was well attended. Its mission was to heighten awareness of common health problems that affect African Americans disproportionately. Renowned health care professionals addressed subjects of: Cancer Research and Treatment, Prevention of Heart Disease, Teen Issues, Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Prevention, Smoking Cessation;, and Family Medicine Practice. Many Health Care and Pharmaceutical Representatives provided educational materials and other free resources. Free flu and pneumonia immunizations were available to Seniors. In addition, blood pressure and diabetic foot screening services and a model demonstration of a breast examination. A total of 47 agencies provided information and screening services at the fair. This event hosted a blood drive with a minimum goal of 30 donors by Life Source. Information was also provided about platelet and marrow donation.
Numerous representatives provided information about Senior Services, including Social Security, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, Adult Day Care, Home Care Services, Family Support, Spiritual Care, and Compassionate Care. There were a variety of complimentary items contributed from banks, hospitals, insurance and pharmaceutical companies. Literature was distributed pertaining to matters of public health, and safety especially, for children. The Illinois Department of Public Aid - Kids Care representatives provided literature on matters of early intervention and they were available to take applications. There was significant interaction with the vendor representatives for: asthma, prosthetics, in home medical equipment, home care and child and family support services to list only a few. Screening services also included balance and flexibility, chiropractic, speech and hearing and vision. The Fire Department provided Coloring Books for children and safety information. Literature was included in each bag given to participants pertaining to “Keeping Guns Away from Children” and much more. A raffle was held and prizes were given to the lucky winners. Face painting was available to the children. Mamie Edie, the storyteller provided entertainment for all in attendance.
Special guest included: Mr. Todd Stroger, Alderman of the 8th Ward, State Representatives Constance Howard and Marlowe Colvin.
This event though sponsored by the Health and Wellness Ministry had the good fortune of receiving the support and assistance of many ministries in the church
This was a wonderful event that brought great
services to the parishioners of St. Ailbe and the community at
large. We are grateful to all who participated!!!! We are
looking forward to future annual Health Fair's in the oncoming
years!
