YVONNE HUEY, BEST WISHES TO YOU AND ERNEST ON YOUR  MOVE

St. Ailbe News - This is the first of many to come written articles commemorating one of our own, who God has placed in our presence. We love you and your family Yvonne. May God continue to Bless you.

Yvonne has been a faithful parishioner of St. Ailbe Parish for 27 years. Yvonne Marie Huey was born in Chicago, Illinois to Rudolph McKay Patterson, an artist and Marie Lola Upchurch, a musician.  She has one brother Rudolph Jr. residing in California.  Her Grandmother used to call her an old spirit because she appeared wise beyond her years.  She was always curious and exhibited a talent for many things.

She learned about the Bible at the knees of her Grandmother before even going to first grade.  She loved the way her Grandmother would read with such expression. Her family was large and very close.  Every one lived on the West side within a few doors of each other, and there were always occasions for the family to celebrate, Christmas being the largest gathering.  Relatives from everywhere would come to say hello and spend time with Nero and Josie (Grandparents)

She and her immediate family moved to the North side where she attended and  graduated from St. Dominic's elementary and high school. She became very involved in music  at St. Dominic's and played for the Glee Club during High School years, which earned her a four year scholarship.

While working at Cook County hospital she met Ernest Huey and after a brief courtship they were married September 10, 1960 after which they resided in the Marynook subdivision, adjacent to Avalon Park on Chicago’s South Side for 40 years.

They have one son, Erik Christopher. Yvonne, while looking for a school that provided before and after school care, inquired at St. Ailbe and found what was needed and has been a faithful member ever since.  She serves in the music ministry and the leadership team. Erik is now a St. Ailbe Alumni. He is  married to Jennifer Lee Bucey;  they have a daughter, Alexandra Marie. Yvonne's granddaughter is the special joy of her life and is the pride of every one's eye.

Yvonne retired from Eastern Airlines after 23 years of service She and her family have traveled extensively.  Europe, the Virgin Islands and Hawaii (her favorite distention).   Upon retirement she earned a Bachelors Degree in Art from Chicago State University.
Her Portfolio includes Solo Art exhibits displayed at the University of Illinois-Chicago, quilt exhibits at several branches of the Chicago Public Library System, several museums and the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC. A permanent exhibit is on display at Bethune College which is sponsored by ISDSA. Music credits include membership in the Kennedy King College Community Choir, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s appearance in African Portraits conducted by Authur Beriborn, and a Solo concert at Chicago’s Berean Baptist Church.

Throughout the years Yvonne has shared much of herself and her talents with us at St. Ailbe. She has been a Choir member since 1977.  Her operatic style and melodious tones will be well remember by St Ailbe parishioners. She received standing ovations on several different occasions with her beautiful rendition of Ave Maria which has been taped and will be placed in the archives of St. Ailbe for future listening

Yvonne designed three Heritage Tapestry Quilts for
St. Ailbe. (picture to the right) The Center Tapestry displays the names of our Historically Black Saints. The Tapestry to the left has been signed by past and present St. Ailbe Parishioners and family members. The Tapestry to the right will be signed  when the left tapestry is filled.

"Clouds of Glory"
was inspired by a picture taken from the window of an airplane during a storm.  (picture to the right) The passengers had been advised to assume the crash position.  However one of the passengers put a camera to the window and begin taking pictures.  In the clouds there seemed to be a figure with arms extended.  Thus the painting.  The plane landed safely without incident.

These quilts are on  display on the west wall of the Church below the balcony. Special mention has to be made of Yvonne's tedious and detailed work on these quilts. She hand-stitched well over 800 pieces to the quilts
